Prosecutors sought a fine of 3 million won (US$2,165) for the wife of opposition leader Lee Jae-myung on Thursday on charges of illegally providing free meals to several people ahead of the 2021 party election to pick a presidential candidate. Kim Hye-kyung, the wife of Lee of the main opposition Democratic Party, was accused of election law violations for providing free meals worth about 104,000 won to the wives of three former and current party lawmakers, and three of her aides at a restaurant in Seoul in August 2021. It was shortly after Lee declared his bid for the party election to select its candidate for the 2022 presidential race. Prosecutors on Thursday requested a 3 million-won fine for Kim during the final hearing at the Suwon District Court ahead of sentencing, accusing her of attempting to buy support from the wives of lawmakers in favor of Lee.
