Phnom Penh: Cambodia and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that was elevated in 2023, and boosting their bilateral cooperation for mutual interest.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the pledge was made during separate meetings in Tokyo on May 30 between Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet and top Japanese leaders, including H.E. SEKIGUCHI Masakazu, President of the House of Councillors; H.E. NUKAGA Fukushiro, Speaker of the House of Representatives; and H.E. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan.
Both sides welcomed the steady progress in bilateral cooperation, which they noted has also contributed to regional and global peace and stability. Japanese leaders voiced support for initiatives that promote Japan-Cambodia friendship and thanked the Royal Government of Cambodia for creating favourable conditions for Japanese investors.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, in turn, expressed his deep gratitude for Japan’s vital role in Cambodia’s peace process and socio-economic development, calling Japan an ‘old, close, and important friend of Cambodia.’
The leaders also discussed cooperation priorities in the areas of economy, trade and investment, security and national defence, mine clearance, finance and banking, infrastructure and connectivity, digital transformation and cybersecurity, clean energy, and people-to-people exchange through education, tourism, and direct flight connections.
This year marks the 72nd anniversary of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Japan.
