Phnom penh: Cambodian Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Prak Sokhonn emphasized that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is an essential platform for promoting regional peace and stability. He highlighted the importance of the ASEAN Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) in achieving these goals. According to Nam News Network, Sokhonn noted that for nearly six decades, ASEAN has played a pivotal role in transforming Southeast Asia. The region, once characterized by division and uncertainty, is now increasingly marked by dialogue, cooperation, and shared prosperity. However, he acknowledged that the region is currently facing a more volatile global climate, characterized by resurgent armed conflicts, intensifying geopolitical tensions, and pressures on international law and multilateral approaches. In response to these challenges, Sokhonn stressed that ASEAN cannot afford to be passive. He urged the organization not just to react to changes but to actively s hape them. He underlined that ASEAN's unity and centrality are crucial to navigating the contemporary geopolitical landscape effectively. Sokhonn, who also serves as a deputy prime minister, expressed pride in Cambodia's contributions to ASEAN since it joined the bloc in 1999. He reiterated Cambodia's strong commitment to bolstering ASEAN's unity, resilience, and global significance, while adhering strictly to the ASEAN Charter and the TAC in both principle and practice. ASEAN, which was founded on August 8, 1967, currently includes Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Timor-Leste.
