Bitcoin topped 100 million won (US$76,306) per unit for the first time in South Korea on Monday, according to a local cryptocurrency exchange. Bitcoin had been trading at 100,020,000 won as of around 4:30 p.m. at the cryptocurrency exchange Upbit. Bitcoin had been trading at some 57 million won earlier this year, but its price soared 75 percent in two months. In January, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved trading of exchange-traded funds tied to the spot price of bitcoin, in a landmark decision for cryptocurrency investment.
