Rome: Peace is indispensable in a rules-based international trading system, said H.E. Prof. Dr. Sok Siphana, Senior Minister in charge of Special Missions and Chairman of the Trade Policy Advisory Board. Speaking at the 2025 World Trade Forum and Related Meetings in Italy recently, H.E. Dr. Sok Siphana emphasized the critical role of peace in maintaining global trade stability.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, H.E. Dr. Sok Siphana pointed out that ongoing conflicts are a significant contributor to global trade disruptions. He cited Thailand’s recent aggression and unilateral border closure as an example, which has adversely affected a US$3 billion bilateral trade agreement.
H.E. Dr. Sok Siphana further expressed concerns over the paralysis of the global trade regime due to escalating political tensions and economic uncertainties. He highlighted the weakening of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the emergence of regional and mini-lateral arrangements as indicators of a shift from cooperative to competitive trade practices.
In his address, H.E. Dr. Sok Siphana reiterated the need for a cohesive world trade system, noting that growing geopolitical and economic uncertainties are hindering progress. He called for renewed commitment to peace to ensure the stability and prosperity of international trade.
