Cambodia and India Strengthen Religious Tourism Ties

Phnom penh: Minister of Tourism H.E. Huot Hak expressed appreciation for the growing cooperation in religious tourism between Cambodia and India, emphasizing the welcoming nature of Cambodian pagodas and Buddhist sacred sites. The minister shared his thoughts during a meeting with Venerable Dr. Bhadant Upagupta Mahathero, the Acting President of the All India Bhikku Sangha, and his delegation from Bihar, India, on July 2.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, H.E. Huot Hak highlighted that Buddhism is deeply revered in Cambodia, recognized as the state religion, with over 95 percent of the population practicing it. He noted that Buddhism significantly contributes to national development across various sectors, including religious tourism. This sector provides opportunities for Buddhist pilgrims worldwide to study Dharma, visit sacred sites, and participate in Buddhist ceremonies according to Buddhist teachings.

The minister also mentioned that the Royal Government of Cambodia supports the practice of diverse religions and faiths, fostering religious harmony in the country. Venerable Dr. Bhadant Upagupta Mahathero expressed gratitude for the warm reception his delegation of 27 Buddhist followers received. He was particularly impressed by Cambodia's development and the thriving Buddhist community.

Venerable Dr. Bhadant Upagupta Mahathero further explained that the delegation's visit aimed to explore Cambodian culture and Buddhist practices, with a focus on visiting renowned pilgrimage sites in Siem Reap province. Both parties agreed to enhance religious tourism cooperation, facilitating knowledge exchange and learning, especially among Buddhist followers.
