Cambodia and U.S. Strengthen Legal Ties to Tackle Cyber Fraud

Cambodia: Cambodia and the United States are strengthening their legal cooperation, focusing on information sharing to bolster investigations and research, particularly in the fight against cyber-enabled fraud. The collaborative discussions occurred during a meeting on July 23 between H.E. Santepundit Chhay Sinarith, Senior Minister in Charge of Special Mission and Head of the Secretariat of Ad Hoc Commission for Combating Online Scams, and Ms. Julia Stevens, Legal Attach© of the U.S. Embassy in Cambodia.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Senior Minister Chhay Sinarith underscored the Royal Government of Cambodia's firm commitment to eradicating cyber-enabled fraud. He highlighted the establishment of the above-mentioned commission, an inter-ministerial body dedicated to this effort, which has actively investigated, cracked down on, and eliminated numerous cyber fraud cases, leading to enforcement actions against suspects and operations nationwide.

He also emphasised the critical need to expand cooperation with international partners in combating technology-enabled fraud. In response, Ms. Stevens commended Cambodia's efforts in this domain, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to explore potential collaboration on shared challenges, including cyber-enabled fraud.

She conveyed the U.S. Embassy's intent to partner with Cambodia in legal cooperation.
