Cambodia will celebrate the 47th anniversary of the Remembrance Day of the 'Journey to Overthrow the Pol Pot Genocidal Regime' on June 20 with the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of various infrastructure in Techo Koh Thmar military historical area (X16) in Thbong Khmum province. Vietnamese Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Nguyen Huy Taing considers the observation of the anniversary as a living testimony of the friendship and solidarity between Cambodia and Vietnam. It also stands as an opportunity for all of us to pay tribute to the outstanding patriots of the two nations who have stood shoulder to shoulder and for the two peoples from all walks of life, especially the younger generation, to remember, he said in an interview with the Agence Kampuchea Presse (AKP) this morning. H.E. Nguyen Huy Taing thanked the Cambodian leaders who had helped the Vietnamese people in the cause of national liberation and territorial unification, as well as the cause of defending and building the country to become what it is today. He continued that the remembrance marks the sacrifice of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen and his allies for the liberation of Cambodia from the dark period. On June 20, 1977, at the age of 25 years old, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, along with four comrades, fled Cambodia to Vietnam through Tonloung commune, Memut district, Kampong Cham province (currently Thbong Khmum province), to form a movement to liberate Cambodia and its people. In 1978, Samdech Techo Hun Sen became a founding member of the United Front for the National Salvation of Kampuchea (UFNSK). With very strong determination and the love of Cambodia and his fellow Cambodians and in collaboration with other patriotic movements as well as with the support of Vietnamese volunteer forces, Samdech Techo Hun Sen overthrew the Pol Pot regime on Jan. 7, 1979 and has steered the nation toward complete peace, unity, and growth since Dec. 29, 1998 thanks to his Win-Win policy.
