Cambodia Dismisses Thailand’s Allegations Over Border Landmine Incident

Phnom penh: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia (MFAIC) has firmly dismissed allegations made by Thailand regarding a landmine incident that injured Thai soldiers along the border. The MFAIC described these allegations as groundless and irresponsible.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the response came after a statement from the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 9, 2025, which accused Cambodia of planting new landmines. The Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) had already provided a detailed explanation in a press release on the same day, refuting these claims.

H.E. Chum Sounry, Secretary of State and Spokesperson of the MFAIC, stressed the importance of restraint and the avoidance of premature public accusations. He warned that such accusations risk undermining trust and the spirit of the ceasefire, especially when constructive engagement is necessary.

Cambodia has urged Thailand to adhere to commitments made at the recent Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee meeting. This includes maintaining current troop positions and refraining from movements or patrols towards the other side's positions.

The CMAA has reiterated that Cambodia has not planted new landmines and is committed to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, which it ratified in 1999. Cambodia has a longstanding record of landmine clearance, having removed over one million landmines and nearly three million explosive remnants of war over the past three decades.

The CMAA emphasized that no official and transparent investigation has been conducted regarding the incident involving Thai soldiers. It called for restraint in public statements to preserve the spirit of cooperation under the ceasefire and prevent erosion of trust.

Cambodia expressed hope that Thailand will respect the agreements reached at the General Border Committee meeting, particularly maintaining current troop deployments without further movement. The CMAA reaffirmed Cambodia's readiness to collaborate with Thailand, ASEAN partners, and the international mine action community to uphold peace and safety.
