Phnom penh: Cambodia has called on Thailand to end its ongoing disinformation campaign and instead engage in constructive dialogue, according to H.E. Chum Sounry, Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, during a press briefing held in Phnom Penh, H.E. Chum Sounry emphasized the serious threat posed by Thailand's disinformation efforts to the implementation of the ceasefire agreement reached at a special meeting in Putrajaya, Malaysia, on July 28, 2025. He stated that the campaign appears to mislead the international community and mischaracterize Cambodia's position while diverting attention from Thailand's actions on the ground.
H.E. Chum Sounry highlighted four key points, beginning with Cambodia's consistent demonstration of goodwill, restraint, and commitment to peace. This includes fully complying with the ceasefire agreement, actively participating in General Border Committee talks, and hosting inspection tours of diplomats and UN agencies to refugee sites to ensure transparency. Cambodia has maintained its stance of self-defense and never initiated hostilities or military engagement.
Cambodia firmly rejects the unfounded allegations made by Thai officers portraying it as the aggressor and accusing it of violating the ceasefire and targeting civilians. These claims are deemed incorrect and dangerously misleading. Cambodia reiterates its self-defense actions in response to incursions and has consistently observed the ceasefire with restraint, ensuring no civilian areas are targeted.
Furthermore, Cambodia urges Thailand to abandon its public misinformation campaign and return to good-faith dialogue and regional cooperation. The disinformation campaign undermines trust between the two countries and threatens the progress made under the ceasefire agreement. Cambodia remains committed to peacefully resolving disputes through diplomatic mechanisms, particularly the productive General Border Committee.
Lastly, Cambodia calls on the international community, including ASEAN member states, UN agencies, observer nations, and particularly Malaysia as the current ASEAN Chair, along with the United States and China, to support objective monitoring mechanisms. Cambodia encourages global media outlets to support independent verification mechanisms, like the proposed ASEAN monitoring team, to ensure objective truth and avoid one-sided narratives. Cambodia reaffirms its commitment to restraint, diplomacy, and full cooperation with regional and international efforts to stabilize the situation.
