Cambodian Foreign Ministry Protests Against Thai Official’s Complaint

Phnom Penh: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia (MFAIC) has registered a protest against Mr. Somkid Chueakong, a Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister of Thailand, over a complaint he filed against Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate of Cambodia. This complaint relates to a recorded phone conversation between Hun Sen and H.E. Mrs. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the Prime Minister of Thailand.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the Cambodian Foreign Ministry emphasized that recording discussions between national leaders is a standard international practice, especially when such exchanges involve diplomacy, national security, or bilateral cooperation. The recordings are intended to ensure communication accuracy, transparency, and support the responsibilities of public offices.

The Cambodian government perceives Mr. Somkid's complaint as a politically motivated action that could lead to misunderstandings between Cambodia and Thailand. The attempt to pursue legal proceedings against a high-ranking official of a sovereign state for actions performed in public duties is seen as undermining the principles of sovereign equality and mutual respect, as outlined in the United Nations Charter.

The MFAIC has urged the Royal Thai Government to address this issue and prevent actions that could harm the friendly relations between the two nations, as stated in their diplomatic note submitted to the Royal Thai Embassy on June 22.
