JAKARTA, China's singles player Zhang Zhi Jie has died after collapsing on court during the 2024 Asian Junior Badminton Championship match in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on Sunday. The incident occurred when Zhang, 24, was playing a group stage match at the Among Rogo Sport Arena facing Japanese opponent Kazuma Kawamo. In a joint statement issued by Badminton Asia and the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) following the incident, they said Zhang passed away at 11.20 pm local time on Sunday. The associations said Zhang was attended to by the tournament doctor and medical team on scene and was taken to the hospital within minutes by a standby ambulance. Badminton Asia, PBSI and the organising committee expressed profound sorrow over Zhang's passing and extended their deepest condolences to Zhang's parents, family, and the Chinese Badminton Association.
