Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is targeting to register at least three million overseas voters for the upcoming 2028 national and local elections. Comelec Chairperson George Garcia expressed confidence in meeting this ambitious target, particularly due to the significance of the presidential elections scheduled for that year.
According to Philippines News Agency, Garcia emphasized the critical importance of the 2028 elections, noting that it would be a pivotal moment in the country's political history as voters will elect the president, vice president, and other key positions. This statement was made during the signing of a memorandum of agreement aimed at establishing field overseas voter registration centers last week.
Garcia revealed plans to register approximately two million new voters when overseas voter registration resumes on December 1. To achieve this goal, Comelec intends to collaborate with other government agencies, seeking their assistance to meet the registration target. The overseas voter registration period is set to run until September 30, 2027.
Previously, during the last overseas registration held from December 9, 2022, to September 30, 2024, around 200,000 individuals registered. In the May 12 midterm elections, there were a total of 1.241 million registered overseas Filipino voters.
