Corruption investigation team assigned to look into suspicions over ex-minister’s travel ban lifting

The anti-corruption investigation agency has designated a team of investigators to look into accusations the travel ban of Defense Minister-turned-Ambassador to Australia Lee Jong-sup was wrongly lifted without due reasoning, judicial officials said Wednesday. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) has assigned the job to the team currently carrying out a probe into allegations that Lee exerted undue influence over the military's probe into a young Marine's death last year. On Monday, a civic group, known as the "National Action for Judicial Justice," filed a complaint with the anti-corruption agency, accusing President Yoon Suk Yeol, Justice Minister Park Sung-jae and Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul of abuse of power and helping a suspect flee. The Korea Innovation Party and the Justice Party also filed similar complaints calling for an investigation into suspicions that Lee was designated as ambassador to help him avoid the investigation and the travel ban was lifted without v alid reasoning. Lee, who served as defense minister, left Sunday to take office as ambassador to Australia, two days after the CIO's exit ban on him was lifted by the justice ministry at his request.
