The Supreme Court on Thursday finalized a suspended prison term for an opposition lawmaker for election law violations, stripping him of his National Assembly seat. Upholding a lower court ruling, the top court sentenced Rep. Lim Jong-seong of the main opposition Democratic Party to four months in prison, suspended for two years, for offering payments or meals for campaign staff in violation of the election law. Lim automatically lost his parliamentary seat after the ruling. By law, lawmakers lose their National Assembly membership if a 1 million-won (US$753) fine or heavier sentence is confirmed, and they are disqualified from running for election for the next five years under the Public Official Election Act.
