Kampot Durian Farmers Renew Optimism after Timely Agricultural Support

Kampot: Durian farmers in Kon Sat commune, Teuk Chhou district, Kampot province, are expressing renewed optimism following a successful intervention by local agricultural officers. Timely technical assistance has revitalised several hectares of durian crops that were previously in critical condition.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, farmers reported that their past cultivation methods, which heavily relied on advice from fertiliser company representatives, often led to ineffective and costly solutions when problems arose. Over the last year, however, consistent technical support and guidance from commune agricultural officers have resulted in a significant turnaround. Their durian trees are now flourishing and producing fruit, instilling confidence in the farmers to expand their cultivation areas.

The farmers highlighted the esteemed reputation and high market value of Kampot durians, recognising their potential to substantially improve household incomes. Encouraged by their recent successes, many are now planning to increase the size of their durian farms.

Mr. Mey Phara, the technical agriculture officer for Kon Sat commune, confirmed on April 28 that the durian trees that were once severely affected have made a full recovery. He noted that many of these trees are currently flowering and bearing a significant amount of fruit.

Mr. Phara explained that these efforts are part of a broader agricultural development strategy spearheaded by Mr. Im Chansorthun, the Governor of Teuk Chhou district. This initiative emphasises the importance of strengthening agricultural practices through the establishment of farming groups and cooperatives, with a particular focus on durian cultivation in Kon Sat commune, alongside vegetable and other fruit crops.

Governor Im Chansorthun's vision extends beyond agricultural productivity. He aims to establish Kon Sat commune as a prominent agri-tourism destination, capitalising on the growing number of tourists visiting the region to stimulate the local economy.
