LABUAN, More than 10 food kiosks along Jalan Mohammed Salleh have received the green light to continue operations until June next year.
Labuan MP Datuk Dr. Suhaili Abd Rahman said the Public Works Department (PWD) and Labuan Corporation (LC) have reached an agreement to allow the traders an extension until a suitable alternative location is identified.
The decision comes as a relief for the longstanding traders who have been conducting their businesses by the roadside, opposite Labuan Nucleus Hospital.
These traders were previously served notices to vacate the land, with their trading licences not set for renewal in the upcoming year.
Dr. Suhaili stressed the potential impact on local families if the traders were forced to cease operations.
"If these traders are disallowed to continue business, we can expect some 60 families will be affected, as more than 60 vendors are sending fruits, home-made cookies and kuih kampung every day to these traders.
'We must thank to the PWD director and LC chief executive officer for their consideration towards the affected traders,' he said to Bernama today.
He further disclosed that Labuan Corporation is actively planning the establishment of a MADANI Kiosk (Gerai MADANI) specifically designed for small-time traders.
"As the MP for Labuan, I fully support the efforts of helping the small-time traders to earn a decent living," Dr. Suhaili affirmed, highlighting his commitment to supporting local businesses during this transitional period.
