The state-run Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) said Thursday it has promoted South Korean small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) as a solution for the global carbon neutrality goal during an event held in the United States. Whang Joo-ho, the CEO of KHNP, described SMRs as "a rising solution" during a keynote speech delivered at the SMR and Advanced Reactor 2024, held from Wednesday to Thursday in Atlanta, and exchanged views with other participants, according to the company. "The world is paying attention to SMRs as a solution for carbon neutrality," Whang said, expressing KHNP's commitment to achieving global carbon neutrality through new models like the SMR Smart Net Zero City Initiative. Whang also called for "borderless cooperation" for the commercialization of SMRs, the company added. The KHNP, meanwhile, plans to participate in the 29th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties slated for later this year, to promote the innovative SMR under development. On the sidelines of the event, the KHN P signed an agreement with Canada's ARC and NB Power to pursue three-way cooperation in the SMR sector Under the partnership, the KHNP plans to participate in the test run, operation, maintenance and project management of ARC's SMR project. "To accelerate the development of fourth-generation SMRs, global partnership is crucial. We hope that KHNP's cooperation with Canada's leading firms will create a synergistic effect," Whang said.
