President Yoon Suk Yeol visited the birthplace of former first lady Yook Young-su, the assassinated wife of former conservative President Park Chung-hee, on Wednesday, his office said. Yoon was greeted by a large number of local residents at the house in Okcheon, 149 kilometers south of Seoul, and he shook hands with them one by one before laying flowers and offering a silent tribute to the former first lady, according to presidential spokesperson Kim Soo-kyung. Yook was killed in August 1974 in a bungled assassination attempt on her husband by a pro-Pyongyang ethnic-Korean man from Japan. Kim said the president toured the house and signed a guestbook with the words: "I will remember the virtuous will of first lady Yook Young-su, who loved the less privileged and children, and warmly look after the people." Yoon is the first sitting president to visit the former first lady's birthplace, the spokesperson said. Source: Yonhap News Agency
