Medical student indicted under detention for murdering estranged girlfriend

Prosecutors indicted a 25-year-old medical student under physical detention on charges of stabbing his estranged girlfriend to death, officials said Thursday. The man, surnamed Choi, was arrested after stabbing her in the neck and near the face to death on the rooftop of a commercial building in southern Seoul in May with a weapon he prepared beforehand. In police questioning, Choi said that the two, who attended the same middle school, had been in frequent disputes after the victim wanted to break up with him. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office indicted Choi on a murder charge. Autopsy results of the victim determined that excessive bleeding from the stab wounds was the cause of the death. Citing the possibility of an unwanted leak of the victim's identity, police decided not to publicly disclose Choi's full name or a mug shot. However, information about Choi's identity circulated online after it become known that he entered a prestigious medical school after getting a rare full score in the national college entrance exam, which garnered media coverage.
