Mine Clearance’s Project Achievement in First Semester Reviewed

The Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA), Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and donor community have convened a hybrid gathering to review the progress of Cambodia’s mine clearance.

H.E. Ly Thuch, Senior Minister and First Vice President of CMAA, and Ms. Alissar Chaker, UNDP Resident Representative in Cambodia, co-chaired the mid-year 2023 board meeting of “Clearing for Result, Phase IV – Mine Acton for Human Development Project” in Phnom Penh on June 15.

Other high-level dignitaries were Deputy Country Director of KOICA Cambodia Office Ms. Jung-yeon Shin, First Secretary of the Embassy of Australia to Cambodia Ms. Chintana Congpaseuth, and First Secretary of New Zealand Embassy to Cambodia Mr. Matthew Allen.

H.E. Ly Thuch thanked UNDP and the peoples and Governments of Australia, South Korea and New Zealand, among other nations for their support for the clearance of landmine and explosive remnants of war in Cambodia.

About US$78 million, he added, will be needed to demine the remaining 359 square kilometres of contaminated land areas for 2024-2025.

He called on all international and local partners to contribute to the mine clearance mission so that Cambodia can achieve its mine-free status by 2025.
