SEREMBAN, The Negeri Sembilan government registered the Kebaya Setengah Tiang as intellectual property with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) on Nov 24 in order to preserve the originality and uniqueness of the traditional clothing.
The office of the State Secretary said that the registration under the Geographical Indication category is also to ensure that the original pattern and cutting of the dress remains the identity of Negeri Sembilan as well as a reference to the public.
"Kebaya Setengah Tiang is one of the nine identities of Negeri Sembilan. The registration is an effort to register other Negeri Sembilan identities so that they can also be registered as patents, copyrights, trademarks and industrial designs," it said in a statement today.
It said the state government also carried out a study to gather information and organised sewing workshops to redesign the original pattern of the Kebaya Setengah Tiang, thereby popularising it to the community.
