National and International Experts Convened in Kratie to Strengthen Conservation of Mekong River Dolphins

Kratie: Government officials, national and international conservation experts, and key stakeholders gathered for a critical workshop on Mar. 24-25, 2025, in Kratie province to discuss the management and preservation of the endangered Mekong River dolphins.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, representatives from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) highlighted that while conservation efforts have yielded positive results, significant challenges remain-particularly the threat of illegal fishing gears, which continues to endanger the dolphin population.

The workshop aims to provide essential insights for evaluating progress, strengthening partnerships, and refining conservation strategies. Discussions will focus on enhancing collaboration, advancing scientific monitoring, developing actionable solutions, and securing sustainable funding to protect the critically endangered species.

Mr. Sreng Sopheap, Deputy Governor of Kratie province, emphasised the success of past Mekong River campaigns in raising awareness and safeguarding the dolphins.

Today's workshop is expected to deliver key recommendations to bolster conservation strategies for this iconic species, recognised as a living national treasure of Cambodia and a symbol of the Mekong River's biodiversity.

This initiative marks a crucial step toward ensuring the long-term survival of the Mekong River dolphins.
