OHCHR Urges Thailand and Cambodia to Honor Ceasefire and Build Trust

Geneva: UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Trk on Wednesday called on Thailand and Cambodia to protect civilians from further harm by fully respecting and implementing the ceasefire agreed on Monday, stressing the need to take quick measures to build confidence and peace.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Trk expressed strong support for the ceasefire, highlighting Malaysia's significant role as ASEAN chair in facilitating the agreement. He emphasized the necessity for both nations to adhere to the terms of the agreement and continue diplomatic efforts to address the underlying causes of the conflict.

The High Commissioner underscored the importance of ongoing efforts by both countries to restore border security and provide redress for those affected by violence and displacement, in line with international human rights and humanitarian laws. Reports indicate that over 180,000 individuals have been displaced on the Thai side, while 168,946 people have been displaced on the Cambodian side.

Trk further called on the authorities in Thailand and Cambodia to take steps to rebuild trust, counter harmful rhetoric, and address misinformation in accordance with international human rights law.
