(Olympics) Hwang Sun-woo sneaks into semifinals in 100m freestyle swimming

Looking to shake off a setback from his main event on the weekend, Hwang Sun-woo squeezed into the semifinals of the men's 100-meter freestyle swimming at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday. Hwang finished his race in 48.41 seconds to rank 16th overall in the heats and grab the last spot for the semifinals at Paris La Defense Arena in Nanterre, west of Paris. The semifinals are scheduled for Tuesday evening, followed by the final on Wednesday. Hwang is the 2024 world champion in the 200m freestyle but he was eliminated in the semifinals of that event here on Sunday. Hwang said after the 100m heats that times across the board at this Olympics have not been great for some reason. "Now that I've been given another opportunity, I will try to overcome challenges ahead of me," Hwang said. "Everyone here, from my coaches to my teammates, has really worked hard for the past three years to prepare for this Olympics. I will try to bring results that can put a smile on everyone's faces." Hwang is also a member of the men's 4x200m freestyle relay team but he will sit out the relay heats Wednesday morning to focus on the 100m freestyle. Hwang will compete in the relay final for Tuesday night should South Korea make it. Source: Yonhap News Agency
