PPP to revise party rules to include public opinion in electing new leader

The ruling People Power Party (PPP) decided Thursday to revise its party rules to include public opinion polls in the election of new party leaders. During an emergency committee meeting, the PPP reached a consensus to select the party's next chairman based on a weight of 20 percent public opinion poll results and 80 percent ballots cast by party members. Under the current rules, which were revised in 2022, only party members are allowed to take part in the election of its leader. Previously, the party chose the chair based on a weight of 30 percent public opinion poll results and the remaining 70 percent cast by party members. The decision comes amid calls for the PPP to better reflect public views after the party suffered a crushing defeat in the April 10 general elections, winning only 108 seats in the 300-member National Assembly.
