The minor Rebuilding Korea Party lodged a complaint Wednesday against first lady Kim Keon Hee on charges of authority abuse and others in connection to her luxury bag gift scandal. The party filed the complaint with the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), accusing Kim of receiving a luxury bag from a pastor named Choi Jae-young in exchange for a favor to appoint Kim Chang-joon, a former U.S. congressman, as a state adviser. The luxury bag scandal has dealt a blow to President Yoon Suk Yeol since a video was released last year of the first lady receiving the Dior handbag, valued at around 3 million won (US$2,200), from Choi armed with a hidden camera in September 2022. The party, led by former Justice Minister Cho Kuk, also filed a complaint against the chief of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission on charges of dereliction of duty after the watchdog closed its inquiry into Kim's allegations last week, citing the absence of rules on punishing a public official's spou se.
