Phnom Penh: The Head of the Spokesperson Unit of the Royal Government of Cambodia has advised both the government and the military of Thailand to cease using Cambodia as a diversion for their domestic political mess.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, H.E. Pen Bona, who is also a Minister Delegate to the Cambodian Prime Minister, highlighted the recommendation in his address on June 24 to respond to ill-willed and groundless accusations by the Thai government that Cambodia is a hub of large online scam operations.
He pointed out that after international media factually reported Thailand as a critical transit point for trafficked victims heading to scam centres across the region, the country shifted blame onto Cambodia in an apparent effort to distract from their own internal issues.
Labeling the accusations as childish and irresponsible, H.E. Pen Bona noted that this was not the first time Thailand had attempted to deflect domestic tensions by targeting Cambodia.
Pen Bona expressed concern over the repeated use of such tactics, particularly when internal struggles for power arise in Thailand. In such scenarios, the military allegedly provokes border tension with Cambodia, using it as an excuse to destabilize the Thai government and gain power for themselves.
The Head of the Spokesperson Unit expressed his dismay for these actions by the Thai side that oftentimes jeopardise bilateral relations and regional solidarity.
