Tonle Sap Authority Boosts Fisheries Monitoring Across Three Provinces

Phnom Penh: The Tonle Sap Authority has recently deployed a technical team to Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, and Siem Reap provinces to enhance the collection of crucial fisheries data. The two-day mission, conducted from June 3-4, is a vital part of a long-running research project aimed at safeguarding the health of the Tonle Sap Lake’s fish populations.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the team from the Department of Business Monitoring and Conservation visited key fishing communities, including Chhnok Trou in Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Luong in Pursat, and Kampong Phluk in Siem Reap. These site visits are integral to a core monitoring system supported by the Mekong River Commission.

For 13 years, since 2012, the Tonle Sap Authority has been committed to monitoring fish species diversity around the lake. The project’s primary goals are to gather data on local fish catches, track biodiversity trends, update the comprehensive fish species database, and generate reports that provide critical insights into the status and trends of the Tonle Sap’s fisheries resources.

This important initiative receives ongoing technical and financial backing from the Mekong River Commission, with coordination by the Cambodia National Mekong Committee.
