Battambang: Farmers of a type of durian grown in Samlot district of Battambang province praise the unique taste of the fruit supplied at a reasonable market price. Ms. Ek Piseth, a teacher and durian farmer in Samlot, shared that her customers consistently commend the fruit’s remarkable flavour that stands apart.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the durian is creamy and fragrant and has a natural sweetness that’s unlike any other because of the impact of the district’s unique soil composition on the fruit’s quality. Despite the labour-intensive care required to cultivate durian and the unpredictable weather patterns affecting harvests, farmers in Samlot keep prices between 22,000 riels and 25,000 riels [US$5.5-US$6.25] per kilogramme during its peak time at the beginning of the harvest season.
Limited awareness of the fruit’s distinct qualities has kept its market value from rising. Another farmer, Mr. Chhon Heang, hoped to see this lesser-known durian gain recognition among consumers. The two farmers encouraged durian enthusiasts to experience the unique taste of the durian in Samlot, and the contribution will motivate the effort that goes into growing this fruit.
