Phnom penh: The United Nations has welcomed the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, urging both nations to respect the agreement as a critical step toward achieving lasting peace.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the UN in Cambodia confirmed that its Acting Resident Coordinator Mr. Sardar Umar ALAM shared these reflections following a two-day field visit from Aug. 6-7. The visit, which included representatives from UN agencies, diplomatic missions, and Cambodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, focused on temporary shelters for displaced people in Oddar Meanchey and Siem Reap provinces.
The delegation witnessed firsthand the dire circumstances of displaced communities, many of whom are facing severe hardship and are in urgent need of humanitarian aid.
"We commend the tireless efforts and rapid response of humanitarian partners," the Acting Resident Coordinator said. "Since the outbreak of the conflict, they have worked relentlessly to provide safe shelters, temporary accommodation, and essential services to affected populations."
Humanitarian efforts are ongoing, providing essential services such as clean water, sanitation, shelter, food, healthcare, education, and protection services.
The statement also noted that displaced communities expressed a profound desire for peace and a safe return home, a priority the UN stressed must be supported through collective action.
The UN reiterated its commitment to working with all partners to sustain the humanitarian response and support the recovery and resilience of these communities.
