UN Urges Utmost Restraint Amid Cambodia-Thailand Border Clashes

Phnom penh: Following Cambodia's report to the UN Security Council on the ongoing border clashes, the UN Secretary-General has called for 'utmost restraint' as tensions escalate between Cambodia and Thailand. H.E. Chum Sounry, Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, said the appeal came after H.E. Keo Chhea, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Cambodia to the United Nations, briefed the UN on Thailand's unprovoked and premeditated military aggression against Cambodian territory.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the UN Security Council held an emergency closed-door meeting on Friday in New York. Malaysia, which currently chairs the 10-member ASEAN bloc that includes both countries, also called for an immediate end to hostilities and offered to mediate the dispute, H.E. Chum Sounry added at a press conference this morning.

The Spokesperson noted that during the meeting, H.E. Keo Chhea urged the Security Council to support an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and emphasised the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The UN Security Council, in response, called on both sides to exercise 'maximum restraint' and to pursue a diplomatic solution - aligning with Cambodia's own position, the spokesperson stressed.
