UNITEN SHOWCASES FUSION OF KNOWLEDGE, INNOVATION, SCIENCE AND ART AT IICE ENGAGEMENT DAY

Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) showcased the fusion of knowledge, innovation, science and art at the Tan Sri Leo Moggie Chair of Energy Informatics and Institute of Informatics And Computing In Energy (IICE) Engagement Day, yesterday.

UNITEN in a statement said the event themed Energy Informatics: Symbiosis of Art, Science & Sustainability featured three engaging and enlightening activities that captivated attendees namely the Tan Sri Leo Moggie Lecture Series, the Research and Innovation Exhibition as well as the Art, Science & Photography Exhibition.

The lecture series titled Space: The Ultimate Energy Source of the Future which was the event's highlight was delivered by the former director-general of the Malaysian National Space Agency (Angkasa) Prof Tan Sri Dr Mazlan Othman.

“She shed light on the future of energy by delving into the potential of dark matter and dark energy, two phenomena that make up a staggering 95 per cent of the universe. Her insightful exploration offered a fresh perspective on the significance of energy in the realm of space,” it said.

Meanwhile, the Research Exhibition featured an impressive display of the latest research projects by IICE researchers, postdoctoral scholars, Multimedia University (MMU) and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL).

“The showcased research spanned various domains and technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, cyber security, bioenergy and chemistry, emphasizing the interdisciplinary and exciting nature of energy informatics,” the statement added.

The Art, Science and Photography Exhibition held at UNITEN's Sunken Garden titled The Ways of the Heart Vol. 2 showcased 20 paintings by renowned Polish researchers, Dr Dominika Golebiewska from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk and Dr Beata Kolakowska from the University of Warmia and Masuria in Olsztyn.

Additionally, the Engagement Day included exceptional artwork by the Di8IT collective, a group of researcher-cum-artists consisting of members from UNITEN, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).

“To further enhance the artistic experience, ten striking photographs by the winners of the Digital Photography Class 2023 were also exhibited,” it said.

The statement also quoted UNITEN Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman who has expressed his enthusiasm for the Engagement Day event and described it as the true embodiment of UNITEN's identity which is creative, innovative and dynamic.

Noor Azuan was quoted saying that IICE served as the leading research institute in energy informatics, fostering collaborations among academia, the energy industry and businesses to address current and future challenges in the field.

Furthermore, the establishment of the Tan Sri Leo Moggie Distinguished Chair in Energy Informatics in 2020, generously endowed by TNB, has positioned UNITEN at the forefront of energy informatics research,” said Noor Azuan.

The statement said the Engagement Day has provided a platform for the exchange of ideas, strengthened collaboration with industry players, showcased groundbreaking research, and celebrated artistic expression.

UNITEN remains committed to pushing boundaries, embracing interdisciplinary collaborations, and shaping the future of energy informatics, he said.

The event was also attended by the former Chairman of the Board for Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Tan Sri Leo Moggie, Holder of Tan Sri Leo Moggie Distinguished Chair in Energy Informatics, Professor Datuk Dr Halimah Badioze Zaman and Chairman of TNB, Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Majid.
