Volker Trk Warns of Global Crisis at UN Human Rights Council

Geneva: We are on an indefensible path of escalating conflict and open disregard for international human rights and humanitarian law, said Volker Trk, addressing the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Offering a global overview, he painted a stark picture of a world in crisis - with surging armed conflict, deepening climate disruption, emerging technological threats, and a worrying rise in authoritarianism.

According to United Nations, Mr. Trk highlighted the spiraling conflicts in regions such as Gaza, where Israel has blocked lifesaving aid and weaponized food. He called for an immediate ceasefire leading to a two-State solution, emphasizing Gaza's integral role in a Palestinian State. He further described the military escalation between Israel and Iran as deeply worrying, urging de-escalation and urgent diplomatic negotiations to end these attacks.

Mr. Trk also addressed the alarming rate at which human rights defenders and media workers are being targeted globally. The OHCHR reported that at least 625 such individuals were killed or disappeared in 2024, equating to one every 14 hours. He emphasized the essential role of civil society and the media in holding power to account, expressing deep concern over attacks on international institutions, including the International Criminal Court (ICJ).

The issue of discrimination was another critical point in Mr. Trk's address. With one in five people across 119 countries reporting discrimination, he noted that this issue is neither rare nor random. Data from the UN indicates that women face discrimination at more than twice the rate of men. He highlighted the oppressive conditions in Afghanistan, where authorities continue to enforce policies that erase women and girls from public life.

In conclusion, Mr. Trk called on governments and societies worldwide to stand up for human rights both in word and deed during these troubled times.
