Cambodia and Laos Pledge to Strengthen Tourism Cooperation

Phnom penh: Cambodia and the Lao People's Democratic Republic have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing tourism cooperation through the revitalization of their 2022 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tourism Cooperation. This agreement aims to significantly boost both domestic and international tourist exchanges between the two Southeast Asian nations.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, this commitment was reinforced during a meeting on July 23 between Cambodian Minister of Tourism H.E. Huot Hak and H.E. Buakeo Phumvongsay, Lao Ambassador to Cambodia, held at the Ministry of Tourism in Phnom Penh. The discussions were centered around practical measures to improve cross-border travel and connectivity.

Key areas of focus included enhancing land and air travel, with both parties exploring ways to make journeys between the two countries more efficient. There was also an emphasis on expanding direct flight routes to strengthen existing air links, facilitating easier access for tourists. Streamlining travel procedures to encourage more visitors and facilitating border-area tourism to make it easier for citizens residing along the shared border to visit attractions in neighboring provinces were other critical points of discussion.

Both Minister Huot Hak and Ambassador Buakeo Phumvongsay highlighted the mutual understanding that tourism is a vital sector, recognized by the leaders of both nations for its crucial role in driving economic growth and improving livelihoods. They further emphasized that robust tourism cooperation serves to strengthen the enduring bonds of solidarity and friendship between the Cambodian and Lao peoples.
