Phnom penh: Cambodia will not allow fake news to lead the way and is committed to collaborating with countries in the region to combat its spread, stated Minister of Information H.E. Neth Pheaktra. He emphasised the need for rapid dissemination of accurate information to counter false narratives.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, speaking to media outlets this afternoon ahead of the 20th Asia Media Summit in Siem Reap city, H.E. Minister highlighted Cambodia's proactive approach. He noted that Cambodia is the only country in the region that has established clear and large-scale mechanisms and campaigns to change public behaviour concerning information consumption. The ministry is also studying documentation and initiatives from other countries that have not yet implemented concrete actions.
H.E. Neth Pheaktra underscored the significance of the 20th Asia Media Summit, stating, "We will share our experiences regarding this issue at the summit." He added that Cambodia anticipates the issuance of the "Angkor Declaration 2.0," a statement specifically addressing the fight against fake news. This builds upon the "Angkor Declaration" from the 2019 Asia Media Summit, which also focused on combating misinformation.
"In 2025, we will prepare an Angkor Declaration on combating fake news," he reaffirmed. "This is crucial because artificial intelligence (AI) is now influencing information, sometimes distorting voices to mislead and confuse the public. We must pay close attention to how we use technology."
Another key topic, according to the Minister, is information diplomacy cooperation. The Ministry of Information is leading discussions on collaborating with other nations, particularly in the context of advancing technology. He stressed the necessity for all countries to work together to enhance information effectiveness and security, ensuring that their citizens receive quality, comprehensive, and safe information free from falsehoods.
The summit will also cover the fourth topic, information technology in society, which significantly empowers youth, especially women. H.E. Neth Pheaktra stated that technology fosters connection, ensuring that no one is isolated.
The Minister expressed his hope for increased regional cooperation in the information and audiovisual sectors, particularly among ASEAN and Asian countries. He emphasised the importance of sharing experiences among nations so that others can adopt best practices.
He concluded that Cambodia's initiative in establishing information diplomacy aims to encourage countries to unite in developing policies, initiatives, projects, and implementations that serve the region and the Asian continent, fostering closer ties and collaborative problem-solving.
