Phnom Penh: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia has sent a diplomatic note to the Royal Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh, demanding an immediate and thorough investigation into the recent firearm hostility at the Cambodia-Thailand border. On May 28, 2025, at 05:30 am, Thai forces unlawfully opened fire on a trench located in Techo Morokot Village, Morokot Commune, Choam Khsan District, Preah Vihear Province of Cambodia, resulting in the unjustifiable killing of a Cambodian soldier. According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the Royal Government of Cambodia emphasized that Cambodian border troops have long been stationed continuously and peacefully at this position well prior to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Survey and Demarcation of Land Boundary between the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand in 2000. The government expressed strong protest against the unprovoked attack by Thai troops, viewing it as a violation of Cambodian sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the spirit of friendship and good neighborliness embodied in the MOU of 2000. The Cambodian government demanded an immediate and thorough investigation into the violent incident and called for those responsible for the fatal and unlawful act to be brought to justice. Despite the tension, the ministry reaffirmed Cambodia's commitment to maximum restraint and resolving the issue through peaceful and diplomatic channels. They aim to use existing mechanisms, including the Joint Commission on Demarcation of Land Boundary (JBC) and the General Border Committee (GBC), to build a border of peace, cooperation, and friendship with Thailand and other neighboring countries.
