Cambodia Voices Strong Concern over Thai Reports on Border Issues

Phnom penh: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia has expressed grave concern over the latest reporting in various Thai official websites, particularly the website of the Spokesperson's Office of the Royal Thai Navy, the Chanthaburi-Trat Border Defence Command, and The Nation (Thailand). These reports suggest that Cambodian citizens are "invading" Thailand in 17 locations along areas adjacent to Cambodia's provinces of Pursat and Koh Kong, including in Veal Veng district, opposite Mueang district, Trat province.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the Ministry stated that while both countries have yet to demarcate several segments of the shared border, people on both sides have lived and cultivated the lands for decades in many un-demarcated areas. The Ministry emphasized that disputes or differences have been amicably addressed through the General Border Committee, with complicated issues referred to the Joint Commission for Demarcation of Land Boundary (JBC) for settlement, in line with the Memorandum of Understanding on the Survey and Demarcation of Land Boundary signed in 2000.

The statement recalled the Special General Border Committee Meeting concluded on September 10, 2025, where both sides reaffirmed their commitment to avoid actions that could escalate tensions. Cambodia has been exercising utmost restraint and complying with ceasefire terms, emphasizing the need for both sides to promote a conducive atmosphere for de-escalation, mutual confidence building, and a return to normalcy.

The Ministry highlighted it is unconstructive to exaggerate issues, as seen in the recent public release by the Royal Thai Navy, which has been addressed with the last communication on February 1, 2022. Cambodia urges the Thai side to resolve the issue through the JBC, scheduled to meet next month.

The Ministry reiterated Cambodia's commitment to peaceful resolution of all border disputes with Thailand and its neighbors, adhering to international law and maintaining that borders must not be changed by force.
