Cambodian NA Delegation Engages in Democracy Talks with SIIS in Shanghai

Shanghai: H.E. Dr. Chheang Vannarith, Deputy Secretary-General and Chairman of the Advisory Council of the National Assembly of Cambodia, along with H.E. Khuon Davith, Deputy Secretary-General of the National Assembly, held discussions with Professor Dr. Chen Dongxiao, President of the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS), on Thursday morning in Shanghai, China.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, this meeting was part of the Cambodian Secretariat-General's Field Visit to Shanghai. The visit is under the project 'Study on the Roles of Local Legislative Bodies in Promoting Whole-Process People's Democracy,' which is funded by the National People's Congress of China through the Chinese Embassy in Phnom Penh, taking place from October 14 to 19, 2025.

During the meeting, H.E. Dr. Chheang Vannarith expressed appreciation to Professor Dr. Chen Dongxiao and SIIS for their hospitality. He outlined the visit's purpose, which was to exchange views and enhance understanding of China's model of Whole-Process People's Democracy.

Professor Dr. Chen Dongxiao provided insights into the historical and cultural evolution of Whole-Process People's Democracy in China. He described China's democratic practice as inclusive, engaging all sectors of society, and emphasized the importance of tailoring democracy to each nation's specific conditions and traditions.

Dr. Chen highlighted that responsive, accountable, effective, and clean governance are vital components of China's democratic system. The meeting aimed to strengthen academic and institutional cooperation between the National Assembly of Cambodia and SIIS, fostering future collaboration in think tank exchanges, policy research, parliamentary capacity building, and governance and democracy learning.
