Beijing: Some Chinese students are choosing to study the Khmer language at the undergraduate level, motivated by Cambodia's rich culture, history, and the expanding opportunities for cooperation between the two nations. According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Mr. Wang Xinqian, named Vibol in Khmer, is a student at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU). He explained that the decision to choose a major in Khmer language literature was based on his recognition of the language's potential in China. 'Cambodia is home to the magnificent Angkor Wat and a longstanding tradition of Khmer language studies that has spanned over six decades at our university,' he stated. Mr. Vibol highlighted that proficiency in Khmer opens doors to numerous careers in China, including diplomacy, foreign affairs, education, investment, and the private sector. 'Studying Khmer also helps strengthen Cambodia-China friendship by serving as a bridge for cultural, civilisational, and traditional exchanges between the two nations,' he added . Ms. Xin Yuchen, named Kunthea as her Khmer name, pursuing Khmer studies at BFSU, shared that she was drawn to the language because of its unique script and Cambodia's flourishing civilisation. 'Khmer studies not only broaden our cultural knowledge but also strengthen the friendship between Chinese and Cambodian youth,' Kunthea said. After graduation, she hoped to apply her Khmer skills either by teaching at a university or working as a translator for investment companies in Cambodia. Both students emphasised that the younger generations of China and Cambodia play a key role in building lasting bonds between the two countries. Through their studies, they aim to contribute to a deeper understanding and cooperation across cultural and professional fields. Beijing Foreign Studies University, one of China's most prestigious institutions for language and cultural studies, was founded in 1941 and has trained generations of diplomats, linguists, and international specialists. The university offers instruction i n more than 101 languages, including Khmer, which was introduced in the 1960s. For over six decades, BFSU has produced hundreds of graduates who serve in government, academia, and business, contributing significantly to Cambodia-China relations.
