Electricity Generation Capacity Surges Eightfold in Cambodia

Phnom Penh: Cambodia's electricity generation capacity has increased more than eightfold over the past 15 years, according to the Ministry of Mines and Energy. "This progress has strengthened Cambodia's economy and contributed to environmental improvements," the ministry stated in a report released on Mar. 24.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, in 2024, the number of electricity connections across all user types increased by 150,375, bringing the total to 3.85 million locations, compared to 2023. By the end of 2024, 3.59 million households-equivalent to 95.24 percent of all households-had access to electricity. Electricity coverage extended to 99.15 percent of villages nationwide, marking a 0.28 percent increase from 2023. Additionally, 120 villages are slated for electrification.

Regarding clean energy development, renewable sources accounted for 61.11 percent of locally generated electricity in 2024. Minister of Mines and Energy H.E. Keo Rottanak recently stated that Cambodia aims to increase the share of clean energy generation capacity to 70 percent by 2030.

Currently, construction is underway on 13 new power generation projects with a combined capacity of 1,275 MW. Furthermore, 23 additional projects, totaling 5,950 MW, have been approved for development.
