Endangered Green Turtle Spotted on Remote Cambodian Island

Phnom penh: Volunteers from the Sea Turtle Conservation Project have recently witnessed a female green turtle, an endangered species, emerging from the sea and coming for nesting on Koh Polu Wai.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the turtle was then safely tagged by trained volunteers before returning to the sea. In 2024, the volunteers also spotted a green turtle on this remote island.

Since 2022, Fauna and Flora, in collaboration with the Fisheries Administration, has been actively raising awareness about the importance of sea turtle conservation and protection by organizing educational workshops and conducting regular patrols on three major remote islands: Koh Polu Wai, Koh Tang, and Koh Pring.

Green turtles (Chelonia mydas) face threats from destructive fishing practices, bycatch, habitat degradation, coastal development, pollution, and climate change.

Their presence on Koh Polu Wai is a hopeful sign of the success of ongoing conservation efforts to protect these remarkable sea turtles.
