Minister: Spreading Fake News Is Not Freedom of Expression

Phnom Penh: Minister of Information H.E. Neth Pheaktra has recently reminded that circulation of fake news is not an exercise of freedom of expression, calling on a joint effort to fight it. Such fake news that carries false and distorting information and manipulates the truth is a violation of the law, and those who are involved in this will be held accountable, he added.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the fight against fake news and misinformation is not a suppression of freedom of expression but an act of ensuring security and protecting the right to factual information of the public. He explained that oftentimes fake news aims to fabricate issues, politicise situations, exploit businesses, and damage reputation and trust for one's gain, especially through the use of social media.

The minister called on everyone from all walks of life to join hands in fighting fake news in Cambodia by acting very quickly by proving the facts and revealing the fake news so as to kill it.
