Senate President Challenges Thailand on Border Dispute

Preah vihear: Cambodian Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen has raised questions regarding Thailand's response to the ongoing border tensions between the two countries. Speaking at a gathering with local council members in Preah Vihear province, Samdech Techo Hun Sen reaffirmed Cambodia's firm commitment to resolving the border issue through peaceful means, including both bilateral negotiations and international legal mechanisms. According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, he questioned Thailand's reluctance to take the matter to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), despite its accusations against Cambodia. 'Bangkok accuses Cambodia of violating Thailand's sovereignty,' he said. 'So why doesn't it file a case at the ICJ? Why avoid legal proceedings? You should not be afraid of what is legal.' Samdech Techo Hun Sen called on the Thai public, the Cambodian people, and the international community to consider these questions carefully. He further emphasised that a court ruling would provi de a clear and neutral basis for both governments to explain the outcome to their citizens. 'For instance, if Cambodia were to withdraw [from the disputed area], the Cambodian public might blame the government. Likewise, if Thailand withdraws, its people might criticise their leaders. But with a court decision, both sides can say: this is the judgment of the international court,' he said. 'Why doesn't Thailand agree to this path? And if not, why not refer the issue to the UN Security Council or the ICJ?' he asked, stressing, 'Only those who lack integrity are afraid of legal proceedings.'
