The Construction of Funan Techo Canal Project to Begin This Year-End

Kep: The construction of the US$1.7 billion Funan Techo Canal project is set to officially begin at the end of this year after the completion of land demarcation and standard verification.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, on July 6, H.E. Sun Chantol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), accompanied by H.E. Peng Pornea, Minister of Public Works and Transport, and other relevant officials, conducted a site inspection of land demarcation and verification in Angkol commune, Damnak Chang-er district, Kep province, after similar visits to Kandal, Takeo, and Kampot.

There is a total of 1,920 marker poles, and the construction would take around four years, according to the delegation.

The Funan Techo Canal project is 180 kilometres long and 100 metres wide upstream and 80 metres downstream with two navigation lanes.

The canal will link Prek Takeo of the Mekong River to the sea in Kep province, crossing four provinces: Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep, with a total of 1.6 million people living on either side of the waterway.
