Vietnam Supports Cambodia’s Initiatives Against Cross-Border and Cyber Crimes

Phnom penh: Vietnam has expressed strong support for the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC)'s efforts in cracking down on, eradicating, and preventing cross-border crimes, including cyber-enabled scams, according to H.E. Nguyen Minh Vu, Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Cambodia.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the Vietnamese diplomat made the remarks during a courtesy and working meeting with H.E. Santepundit Chhay Sinarith, Senior Minister in charge of Special Missions and Head of the Secretariat of the Ad Hoc Commission for Combating Online Crimes, in Phnom Penh this morning.

During the meeting, H.E. Santepundit Chhay Sinarith reaffirmed the RGC's commitment to eradicating cyber scams through the establishment of the above-said commission, a mechanism that brings together relevant ministries, institutions, and authorities. He noted that the commission complements existing frameworks under the Ministry of Interior, the National Police, and the Unified Command Committees at the municipal and provincial levels.

Following the establishment of the commission, Cambodia has intensified investigations, crackdowns, and clean-up operations at suspected locations while enforcing legal measures against suspected perpetrators, the Senior Minister added. He also shared recent operational results and emphasised the necessity of strengthening and expanding cooperation among all stakeholders to fight cyber-enabled scams effectively.

Ambassador Nguyen Minh Vu highlighted that cyber scams are not unique to Cambodia and are a global issue affecting many countries. He affirmed Vietnam's full support for joint operations to combat cyber-enabled crimes and expressed Vietnam's readiness to assist with both prevention and investigations when requested. The Ambassador noted that criminals often move across borders to evade law enforcement, stressing the need for close bilateral cooperation in this field. He also expressed gratitude to the RGC for its continued cooperation in the security sector.

Both sides exchanged views on past cooperation and discussed future measures to deepen bilateral collaboration in combating cyber scams. This includes sharing information, enhancing coordination, and facilitating the repatriation of Vietnamese nationals involved in such cases back to their home country.
