Cambodia Briefs Diplomatic Corps on Cambodia-Thailand Border Situation

Phnom penh: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC) convened a meeting in Phnom Penh on August 15 to update members of the Diplomatic Corps and UN agencies on the ongoing developments concerning the Cambodia-Thailand border situation.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the session was led by H.E. Ms. Eat Sophea, Acting Minister of MFAIC, who highlighted the outcomes of recent discussions between Cambodia and Thailand. The focus was on the Special Meeting that led to a ceasefire agreement on July 28, 2025, in Putrajaya, Malaysia, and the positive results from the extraordinary meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on August 7, 2025, also in Malaysia.

Concerns were raised by Cambodia regarding the increased risks to the fragile truce due to several activities deemed inconducive to peace. These activities include the laying of barbed wire and the movement of forces, actions which are seen as detrimental to mutual trust and contrary to the ceasefire terms.

H.E. Ms. Eat Sophea addressed allegations against Cambodia, specifically rejecting claims of newly laid landmines, and reiterated Cambodia's dedication to achieving a peaceful resolution in the border dispute with Thailand.

The Acting Minister also discussed the results of the Tea Chat Meeting involving the Foreign Ministers of Cambodia, China, and Thailand. This meeting was held on the sidelines of the Mekong-Lancang Foreign Ministers' Meeting on August 14, 2025, in Anning, Yunnan, China.
