Cambodia Renews Appeal for Return of 18 Soldiers Detained by Thai Forces after Ceasefire

Phnom penh: Thai forces unlawfully detained 18 Cambodian soldiers just hours after the ceasefire entered into effect and have kept them in custody for 18 days, said H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, Under Secretary of State and Spokesperson of the Ministry of National Defence.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, 'Thai soldiers illegally arrested Cambodian military personnel immediately after the ceasefire took effect on the morning of July 29, 2025. As of 11:00 a.m. on Aug. 16, 2025, their detention has lasted 18 days, 3 hours, and 10 minutes,' she stated at a regular press briefing in Phnom Penh.

Cambodia once again urged the Thai side to fully respect the ceasefire agreement and to promptly return the 18 soldiers so they can reunite with their families, who have been waiting days and nights, she stressed.

'The Royal Government, the Armed Forces, and the Cambodian people stand united in defending our territory, dignity, and sovereignty with unwavering determination and clarity,' H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata affirmed. 'Full implementation of the ceasefire by both sides will create a favourable atmosphere for restoring peace, stability, and normalcy to the relations between our two countries and peoples.'

Regarding the border situation, the frontlines in Military Regions 4 and 5-covering Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, and Banteay Meanchey provinces-remained calm and stable from midnight until 10:00 a.m. today.
