New york: H.E. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, is leading a Cambodian delegation to attend a special event on climate action during the High-Level Week of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) and related meetings from Sept. 23-25, 2025, in New York, USA.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the Minister is scheduled to deliver a keynote address on behalf of the Royal Government of Cambodia at the UNGA meeting on climate action, as well as an intervention statement on behalf of the States Parties to the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity Beyond Areas of National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement) under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
He will also lead the Cambodian delegation in delivering speeches, engaging in relevant discussion forums, and holding bilateral meetings with leaders of friendly nations and development partners. The aim is to strengthen cooperation, deepen bilateral relations, and jointly address environmental challenges, particularly climate change, a global issue of common concern.
According to the Ministry of Environment, Cambodia has reaffirmed its strong commitment to climate action. This was demonstrated through the submission of its Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) on Aug. 8, 2025, which sets an ambitious target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent by 2035.
The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, held under the theme 'Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights', comes at a critical moment to renew global commitment to multilateralism, solidarity, and collective action for people and the planet.
This year's High-Level Week underscores the urgency of fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals and revitalising global cooperation.
